As probably some of you already know, last october 2016 has ended the 17th edition of Viewconference - the event on computer graphics, animation, the most important effects in Italy and probably one of the most prestigious in Europe. This year was held the 17th edition, always in the name of openness to creative young people and schools (hundreds has been students who participated to this event).

The leitmotif of this edition, as well as always to the visual effects and animation in general, is certainly virtual reality, and many are the talk where he's talked at length.

It has developed over the past years some "therapeutic videogames", with the goal of to try to cure this kind of disease, but not only.

The approach of Akili is based on the foundation for which, today, we do a lot for our physical well-being: wellness, physical activity, gym, sports, but in general we do nothing to develop our brain that, if we don’t push it and we don’t use too much, it relaxes and loses its flexibility.

October 27th, ore 4:30PM - Viewconference 2016, Turin (Italy). Barry Meade, co-founder of Fireproof Games tells us about the process that led to the creation of his Game Studio and the creation of The Room, Game of the Year for iPad in 2012. Barry has experience animator in the game industry, developed especially within the Criterion Games team, and working especially in driving games as Burnout 3, Burnout 4, Burnout Pradise and also Black. With some of his colleagues, during those some years in Criterion Games they created a friendship and a unity of purpose and they decide to leave their job to founding a new independent software house.

In the beginning of their experience as indipendent studio, there were only six, and at first they had to refuse many jobs, if they need to hire other people: in fact, they didn’t want to become an outsourcing hub as happens in many companies that work for major studios, because their concept was that "if you do something you do not like, you can not put your soul on it."

At the beginning of 2012 they have therefore decided to approach the mobile games market, fast growing at that time, although they didn’t know much about devices, technologies, mobile programming languages… in general neither the industry nor the systems development: they decide to hire for some months some developers specifically oriented to mobile, specifically with the idea to let these developers to develop their ideas and game concepts, and at the same time to study and learn from them.

The main idea was to develop three different video games in the early months of 2012, starting to prototype them, then decide on which of the three focus a complete development. The Room was the second one and from the start it was clear that the game could be very good: they immediately decided to continue the development of this, so leaving aside the idea of creating the prototype of the third idea.


The game “The Room” was released in September of 2012 and was immediately inserted in the Apple Store in the “recommended games” box: this allowed them to have a boost in sales, but it lasted very little (just a dozen of days) and the sales curve has dropped to much lower levels, until in the Christmas period, where there was another major spike in sales, also lasted for a couple of weeks, and which coincided with the election of “the Room” as best iPad game for 2012.

In general, the gains were not very high, but however they was satisfactory to give them the possibility to maintain open their Studio.

Barry tells us that, in general, if you pass the first year without closing, then you have a very good chance that things start to get going. However, we must always remember that if you seek the highest gains, probably you cannot reach this goal, because as Indie Studio you need to challenge every day in a market where there are top games, developed by teams of dozens (or more) people and very high budgets.

Speaking about earnings, Barry say their policy has been not to focus on in-game advertising, but focusing their strategy on a more targeted audience of people willing to pay for a game, but a game well developed and free from disturbing elements (as ads in free-to-play games).

October 28th, 9:00AM - Viewconference 2016, Turin (Italy). In this talk Karen Dufilho-Rosen - executive producer of the Google Spotlight Stories team - presents the video in VR made by her team with the title Pearl, which can be viewed with any viewer for virtual reality, such as Google Cardboard (which you can find easily, for example in Google Play Store or Amazon).

The team where Karen works has the task to study and test new technologies and - in this example - discover how to create new opportunities in the field of storytelling.

The video is about 3 minutes long, or if you want the duration of a song (that is the soundtrack of the whole video) and most of the time is shown inside a car, in which a father and a small daughter evolve, grow, changing their relationships and - at some point - their roles in their relationship.

A very emotional video, in which the user is immersed in the story because it’s placed in the passenger seat: so the user has the ability to rotate his heads and see what happens inside the car, observe the driver, the passengers in the back seat, watching out the window.

Karen focuses a part of her talk on how much they studied the graphic design, always looking for the right stylistic compromise to tell the story in a good way.

One consideration that I personally arises concerns the fact that: 1. The video as I said is very exciting and well done, and 2. I think (but it’s my very personal opinion) the VR here is not helpful.

What I mean is in this story the shots and the right perspective to watch the story are fundamental: it’s absolutely necessary for understanding and folllow the story, and this could not happen because the video runs as fast as a music video, change scenes quicly and - if the user could have no time to see something done by characters, losing something in the story.

This is my personal opinion, I mean that this is valid for this particular story; of course Pearl is a production made in a time where there isn’t a standard in storytelling, they are only experiments, then everything is fine at the moment, the important thing is testing, and compare the feedbacks from the web users. After all, says Karen Dufilho-Rosen, a rule that exists in Google - but it’s a rule valid in all Silicon Valley area - is "The quickest way to do something is do it". What do you think?

During the final minutes of this talk, Karen speaks also about a SDK (where the acronym stands for time Story Development Kit), but currently it is a rather complex software that was released in testing only some studios, not for everyone.

October 28th, 6:30PM - Viewconference 2016, Turin (Italy). Roger Guyett shows us a long series of deleted scenes, test, preview, etc. related to sequences from the last Star Wars movie, the Awakening of the Force, for which he was the Visual Effects Supervisor for ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) .

Roger tells us that the movie counts over 2200 shots with some type of vfx. The collection of references was a very long work, especially they focused their attention to understand what should be the right shots and the right light.

This led them to the desert of the United Arab Emirates, during the summer ar the 50° C… it was very tiring, one of the worst things that he has done throughout his career, but it was still a very useful experience for him and for all his team to understand what were the changes in light throughout the day, the change in color of the sky and the sand.

October 27th, 9.00AM - Viewconference 2016, Turin (Italy). Mauro Fanelli from Mixed Bag presents the productions of this italian indie studio, that develop games mostly for consoles. I arrived late and this talk was already started; he spoke about “Forma.8”, a videogame made with Unity 3D and whose release date is scheduled for January 2017, if no delays occur, and will be available for all platforms (smartphones, tablets, PCs, consoles) and also on Steam Powered website.

Forma.8 is an exploration game where the player is be completely free to move around the game world: in fact, the world is a “single openworld”, although there will be five fights boss, but wothout an "end of level connotation" .

The game will have a total of 8 hours of gameplay, a great deal if you think (he said) indie games normally have no more than 4.5 hours, and the current standard is only 2 hours / 2 hours and a half.

An interesting feature is the presence of multiple endings, while from a technical standpoint, they worked a lot to allow 60 fps on all platforms.

Speaking about graphics, Mixed Bag was inspired by two classic videogames of '90s: Metroid and Another World. Another interesting feature is that there is no in-game text: a deliberate choice, but it has meant a complex challenge.

From the point of view of marketing and visibility, they have been helped by the manufacturers of consoles (Nintendo and Sony). For example, Forma.8 is sponsored by Nintendo, while another their game - Futuridium - it has been sponsored by Sony.

Developing Forma.8 required a long study and test on the graphic design and the final look of the game; they decided to give it a minimal look, with much presence of black and background objects with bright colors. Reaching to this style they did many tests and iterations, but now they are very satisfied because they arrived to its goal: giving to the player a sense of mystery.

Another important factor was the control system, initially designed for tablets only (iPad) and then simply extended to other platforms, because the system worked fine with all devices.

Technically, all assets are in vector graphics, made in Adobe Illustrator and then passed to Unity 3d through an importer they developed ad-hoc.

At the end of this talk, Mauro Fanelli give us some suggestions about how a small indie studio could have success in the videogame market: he told us the most important think is trying to create a networking of professionals, and attend to meetings of game development. Then, another important tip is to try to prototype all our ideas, because this is the only way to test if they are good or not... and to do this Unity 3d is a great tool and could help us in this.

October 27th, 10.00AM - Viewconference 2016, Turin (Italy). Mitchell Broner Squire, Co-Founder & Business Manager of Oniride, introduces the talk of Fabio Corrirossi - head developer of the Italian startup Oniride - where he worked mainly dealing with VR.

Oniride works mainly on projects for museums and archaeological sites, but today they wants to show us their project of immersive comics using virtual reality devices.

The biggest problem (but also the great creative challenge) from the point of view of developing virtual reality applications is that today there are no rules yet; this is why, in recent months, Oniride developed their first “virtual comic”, initially for Android and also available today on Oculus Store.

They are concentrated in creating this type of product (comics VR) because the possibilities provided by virtual reality for storytelling are enormous; for this reason, they want to create a trend, a comics vr market and to push this idea they created their first product called “Magnetique”.

Technically, comics VR are not only 360° pages as we can saw in hundreds ways in the past as today, they had to develop a procedure, especially to communicate with the graphic artist to tell him how to draw their scenes, to let everything be in the proper perspective from the eyes of the VR viewer.

The application manages different layers to give a stereoscopic effect, although during the presentation it seemed that the implementation of the layers was not always used for comic Magnetique developed by them, but only sometimes (maybe to decreasing developing times).

Oniride did not want to create motion comics, but only and exclusively static comics in VR, possibly creating a new trend to use VR technologies

At the end of the talk they also give us some information about development costs:

Magnetique has cost € 2,000 per chapter, and they were made 10 chapters, for a total of about 70 minutes of content; the cost per minute is about of € 300. And the total cost is about € 20.000.

The idea of Oniride is to create a new content creation standards in virtual reality and attract new investors.

The future will give its verdict.

Months ago I was looking for some event, course or conference to attend, so starting some queries on the Internet I realized that there are no websites that collect events for graphics and web professionals. There are some webistes or blogs that collect events in Europe or in general in the World, which also include some (very few) events in Italy.

At that time I was looking for some easily accessible locations, which is why I started to pick on Google Calendar new events I was finding. Then, I thought I could also make a good service to other people, as me interested to increase their skills being phisically in contact with other professionals.

My latest 3d work for ‪‎3d printing‬ is a personal project: a cappuccino cup / coffee mug with the head of ‪Jeeg Robot (Kotetsu Jeeg)‬.

How you can see in these photos, this is not a simple mug with a sticker applied on it: there are thousands of mugs like that and many services you can create your own at 5 euros. This is a mug completely different, cause my idea was to create something of really original: I call it "mug" because the volume of drink you can put on it is similar to a mug, but its shape is completely redesigned and assume a head of a famous robot of Japanese anime series and manga (Kotetsu Jeeg).

Sculpting my 3d model to be ready for 3d printing

Starting from my old 3d model created in 1999 with Lightwave 3d, I modified the head, clear many polygons, attaching all parts into one and clear all surfaces, because my goal was to print it in a shiny white, without original colours.

Rotary Club Manager is an Apple iPad app developed by Taiprora srl for Rotary Club Pescara Nord to manage events of a Rotary club. This app is oriented to collect the names and the signatures of the participants (members and guests). At the end of each event, the collected data can be sent to an email address (configured by the user), to permit the the administratives to send the bills and to maintain a database of all events with the complete list of all participants.
This app has been made in 2011.

Role in thie project

In the Taiprora development team, I worked on the functional analysis of the app, on the preliminary graphic interface design study, and its final review.

As employee of Taiprora srl I developed this project for the Dayco Europe's Marketing office (located in Turin, Italy): the project consisted in developing the institutional website of Dayco Argentina and Dayco Brasil for the aftermarket markets.
Developed in 2011.

Role in this project:

As employee of Taiprora srl, I covered different roles in this project: from the accounting to determine the project requirements and the Customer's needs, the anaysis, the documentation and the contract, until the project management, the front-end desing, the web development in php, css and javascript (jquery).
I modified the corporate layout to fit it better to Argentina and Brasil market areas needs.
Today I'm working on the maintenance for both these websites.

This project involved the realization of a artificial vision measuring System (laser + videocamera + software in C++) for the optimization and supervision applied to the production of tires with the aim of improving the quality of production.

The system is based on a linear laser beam for illuminating the area to be controlled, and by two cameras for capturing images of the sample for calculations.
The software process the scanned images, calcultes evauate the dimensional values of each samples and outputs to screen the results.
In case of values out of tolerance, the System can be set to automatically stop the production line to enable staff to carry out inspections and audits on the source materials and correct the errors.
This project was made in 2011.

ROLE IN THE PROJECT:

Within the development team Taiprora, who created this project, I created the whole interface graphic design for desktop PC ssytems.

This project, developed by Taiprora under the revamping of an Automatic Warehouse in the Sanofi Aventis factory in L'Aquila (Italy), provides the implementation of a software system for Siemens SIMATIC WinCC SCADA System for the supervision, control and allocation the tasks of translates in stock. Developed in 2010.

Role in this project

Within the development team Taiprora, I did an usability analysis for the GUI of the software, and I designed and developed the UX user interface, giving a support for every problems related to graphics, design and usability (formating, standardization of the layout, etc).

As an employee of Taiprora, I created Starwood website (a trademark of Starpur), a company specialized in the production of wood-aluminum frames (windows and doors). The implementation included the development of the site from the graphic design provided by the customer, providing a complete commercial CMS ("Wave CMS" by Taiprora) for content management and SEO. This project was completed with a web competitive analysis and a SEO optimization. Project developed in 2010.

Role in this project

I worked on this project covering different roles, from project management, to web development using LAMP technology (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP).
I also made a preliminary competitive analysis, benchmarking of the most used keywords in this market, carrying out a study about the potential of keywords to suggest the customer the best set of keywords to use in his SEO and web marketing campaign.
